The Epic of Mahabharata is a story that has been part of the South Asian culture for centuries. This Bengali Drama by Saoli Mitra has been a classic theatrical adaptation of the Epic is an evergreen work of brilliance.
Saoli Mitra is a veteran theater personality who has produced many classics. Saoli Mitra is the only child of Bengali Theatre’s power couple Shombhu Mitra and Tripti Mitra. She has been a part of the theater world from a very early stage. As a child artist she acted on many notable plays. Some of them were big classic productions like Tulshi Lahiri’s Chhera Tnar and Tagore’s Daakghar. Both of these dramas were huge hits from the stable of Bohurupi Productions. Saoli Mitra’s sprawling career has many feathers attached to her cap. She formed her own theater group Pancham Vaidik which is one of the leading theater production houses in the country. Both Shombhu Mitra and Tripti Mitra were founder members of this group. Saoli Mitra has directed many contemporary plays and is known for her intellectual interpretations of many contemporary issues.
This Drama “Kathaa Amritasamaan” is a fantastic interpretation of the epic executed brilliantly by Saoli Mitra. This is one of the first modern and contemporary takes on the Epic Mahabharata.
Saoli Mitra’s brilliant script is worth a standing ovation. This drama was a huge hit among the masses and hugely intellectually acclaimed. Saoli Mitra’s take on many contemporary social issues through the story of Mahabharata is work of sheer brilliance. The narration is flawless and lucid. Rather than taking any religious side her explanation of Mahabharata through a more social and contemporary path is definitely intellectually brilliant. This Bengali Drama was a path breaking work of art in the world of Bengali Theatre. The narration of the epic is well colored with chosen songs that adds to the drama and never disrupts the flow of the story. The various colors of the Epic Mahabharata are well drawn and depicted. This is a rare album from the stable of Hindusthan Records.
