This album “Tribute To Salil Chowdhury” is a compilation of modern Bengali songs by the legendary Composer music director and lyricist Salil Chowdhury. This album has songs sung by eminent singers from the Hindi and Bengali film industry like Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Antara Chowdhury and Asha Bhonsle.
Salil Chowdhury was undoubtedly one of the most experimental and improvisation-based composer of his era. Salil Chowdhury himself was a great musician and a multi instrumentalist, he could play the flute, piano and even esraj (an Indian string instrument). Salil Chowdhury was keen on western melodies from his childhood. At a very early age Salil Chowdhury joined the IPTA (Indian peoples Theater association), which was the cultural wing of the communist party of India. At this phase a lot of memorable compositions were scored by Salil Chowdhury which later on became huge hits and many famous artists sung them.
Salil Chowdhury's debut as a music director in Bengali films happened in the year 1949 with the film “Poriborton”. But with his Hindi film debut Salil Chowdhury's career took a sky jump. This was Bimal Roy's “Do Bigha Zamin” which released in 1953. Salil Chowdhury wrote the story for the film and composed music for it too. This film got the first best film award at filmfare awards and also won prizes at the Cannes Film Festival. Salil Chowdhury after this was associated with a number of hit films and songs.

Some of the legendary voices of Indian film industry had sung some of them. Lata Mangeshkar for example sang the song “Aaj Noi Gun Gun” which became a smash hit instantly. Another hit song in this compilation is “O Amar Sajani Go” which is a duet sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. Salil Chowdhury's daughter Antara Chowdhury also sang a lot of her father's compositions and one such hit is compiled here which is “O Mago Ma“.
