An Introduction to Digital Humanities - Bay Area DH

Defining the Digital Humanities

Digital humanities scholars are a diverse group whose work is the result of cross-pollination among humanities scholarship, computer science, and digital media. Many well-known digital humanities projects apply tools borrowed from computer science—such as data-mining or geographic information systems—to works of literature, historical documents, and other materials traditionally in the domain of the humanities. What do digital humanities scholars see as the potential of this interdisciplinary field? And what are the important theoretical and methodological contributions digital humanities can offer to both the humanities and the sciences Panelists: Daniel J. Cohen, Assoc. Professor of History and Director of the Center for History and New Media (CHNM) at George Mason University. Ramkumar Chatterjee | Bengali Tappa | Ramkumar Chattopadhyay Songs

Ramkumar Chatterjee has been a key ingredient for the popularity of Bengali Tappa. Tappa as a significant genre in Bengali musical styles reached its zenith for its lyrical content as well as renditions, arguably unmatched in other parts of India. The Bangla Tappa became hugely popular in the latter half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. Bengali Tappa was the genre of choice of the wealthy elite as well as the classes with more modest means. An evolved form of the tappa was the Baithaki format. This bangla Baithaki Gaan evolved under the direct patronage of the Zamindars. This style was always associated with Baithak-Khanas and Jalsaghars literally meant for entertainment.

Ramkumar Chattopadhyay was an expert in this style. He took this format one step ahead by involving witty and dual meaning lyrics mocking the British Raj in a not so straight forward but a rather subtle but pinching manner. A Classic example of his fine sense of humor can be witnessed in one of Ramkumar Chattopadhyay’s most hit song-“Kader Kuler Bou” listed in the above compilation. This was a literal translation meant for an English lady which said, “Madam whose family do you belong to”. Another notable song which became an instant hit after its release was the adaptation of one of the short stories from Aesop’s tale. This is the story about how a bone got stuck in a tiger’s throat and how a clever stork took it out. The song “Ekoda Ek Bagher Golay” became immensely popular. Also there are songs like “Hok Na Kalo” which were more populist and commercial as far as lyrics were concerned and songs like these gave bengali Tappa a huge audience. Such sarcastic lyrical content and brilliant rendition (gayaki) was what made Ramkumar Chatterjee notably the biggest Tappa sensation of all times.

Ramkumar Chatterjee | Bengali Tappa | Puratoni Bangla Gaan | Baithaki Gaan

Ramkumar Chatterjee is one of the greatest exponents of Bengali Tappa, Puratoni Bangla Gaan and Bangla Baithaki Gaan. The Bengali Tappa or Baithaki Gaan as some prefer to call this music because of its patronage by the Zamindaars and rich Babus, reached its crescendo in the late 19th century and early 20th century. This was a heavily lyric based music where the lyrics were mostly humorous and cynical. The Bangla Baithaki gaan was a little more evolved intellectually and had a more classy outfit to it as it was literally nurtured in the Baithak Khanas and Naachghars of the Zamidaar houses.

Ramkumar Chatterjee is a master craftsman of this genre. He researched and modified the Bengali Tappa to a different level. Ramkumar Chatterjee has been a key element in taking these songs out of the Zamindar’s houses and recording them and popularized them amidst the masses. Many of his songs had a satirical element that mocked at various social issues as well as made subtle fun about the British Raj as well.

This album “Puratoni Bengali Songs” has a classic example of such a satirical song, which is “Kader Kuler Bou”. This song was has an English version also sung by Ramkumar Chatterjee and the literal transition is “Madam whose family do you belong to?” and this was a direct satire made for an English lady in those era. There is another classic example from the above compilation that has an immediate reference to the Eshop’s Tales. This song is titled “Ekoda ek Bagher Golay”. More or less all songs in these genre of Bengali Tappa or Bengali Puratoni Songs were a raging hit amongst the masses and became evergreen hits. One of the most popular lyricists of Bengali Tappa was this person named Nidhu Babu. Ramkumar Chatterjee and Nidhu Babu’s combination was an instant hit and they have worked together for many such mass hits. A classic Nidhu Babu Ramkumar Chatterjee example from this above compilation is “Bidhi Dilo Jadi”. These were phenomenal hits and that is what makes this compilation such rich and beautiful.
